Did you know that August is Children’s Eye Safety Month? As you start thinking about going back to school, this is also the perfect time to schedule your child’s eye exam. Keep reading to learn why children’s eye exams are so important!
Most doctors recommend that kids get their first comprehensive eye exam at age 3. Eye exams are the only way to identify vision or refractive errors.
If your child has a refractive error, it includes farsightedness, astigmatism, or nearsightedness. They could have other problems like lazy eye, color blindness, crossed eyes, or droopy eyes.
All these conditions are completely treatable. Depending on the condition, they can be treated with patches, eye drops, glasses, or tools.
Although your child may receive a vision screening at school, it’s not enough. Vision screenings only do so much.
In fact, did you know that vision screenings miss 70-80% of vision problems in kids? That’s a lot!
Part of the reason for this is because a vision screening doesn’t involve dilating the pupil.
When you dilate the pupil, you get a much more thorough picture of the eye’s health. If your child has an undiagnosed vision problem, it may not be detected during a vision screening.
After the age of 3, children should have comprehensive eye exams every two years. Keep in mind that this number should increase if your child wears glasses or contacts.
If they already have an existing vision problem, they should have an annual eye exam. In any case, a vision screening should not count as an eye exam, and it shouldn’t take the place of an eye exam as well.
